DOP303 - OpenTelemetry on AWS, beyond the instrumentation and into resource attributes

1H Deep Dive - Room: houtwagen - Start Time: 15:30

OpenTelemetry is the emerging open-source standard for collecting telemetry like distributed tracing data, metrics and logs. While examples abound for adding basic instrumentation to applications, a lot of potential is left untapped in terms of annotating through resource attributes where that telemetry is collected in terms of infrastructure, orchestration service, etc. The context that results from well-crafted resource attributes enables more focused alerting (e.g., “on which environment is the issue occurring?”), better impact analysis (e.g., “which customers are affected in a multi-tenanted system?”) and better cross-layer correlation (e.g., “the applications suffering latency spikes are running on the same cluster that is having high CPU saturation”). In this workshop, we will discuss the basics of OpenTelemetry resource attributes, why they supercharge your observability, and what is available today in the various OpenTelemetry SDKs in terms of AWS services like AWS Lambda, Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS and AWS AppRunner. We will also be looking at the AWS Distro of OpenTelemetry and what facilities does the OpenTelemetry Collector have to add, remove and manipulate resource attributes.
